Life around the holidays can get really hectic. Who couldn’t use 8 days a week to get work and housework done so that you can even begin to think about exercise? Especially during this time of year! I hear you. I am a full-time student, wife and mom, and I work part-time as a yoga instructor at CDT and in food prep for the Y’s Mobile Fit program. So, believe me, I hear you. Life is so stressful. So how do we fit everything we need to do, including what we need to do for our sanity, into a hectic schedule?
Let me tell you about a little secret. Yoga is one of those things that you have to fit into that crazy schedule. According to the article “Exploring the Therapeutic Effects of Yoga and its Ability to Increase Quality of Life,” Yoga can be done as a balancing therapy in the treatment of “stress, anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders.” It has proven to be a confidence booster of body-image and of one’s own strength, and it also boosts confidence with others at work and home. It also helps to “… increase attentiveness, lower irritability, and encourage an optimistic outlook on life.”
For me, I’ve found that being optimistic helps my mood and productivity levels that affect all other aspects of my life. I am asked how I am able to juggle everything I have going on, and my simple answer is yoga. There are so many different types of yoga from which one may choose. At Chattanooga Dance Theatre, we offer Yoga Foundations for the beginner yogi or anyone wanting to work on basic postures. We also offer multi-level classes and vinyasa (flow) classes.
To help you on your yoga journey, we offer wonderfully stable cork blocks, colorful Mexican blankets, and buckled straps to use as props. We also have mats to borrow, in case in your daily frenzy you may have forgotten yours, or maybe you do not have one quite yet. Our classes are taught in a state-of-the-art facility with a speaker system with music that may be heard throughout the room for mood, and the track lighting and standing lamps help to create an ideal ambiance. Windows also contribute to classes, bringing in natural light, and mirrors benefit students by allowing them to see themselves aligned properly in postures. Our yoga instructors have 200-hour certifications, at least, and each of them have their own unique personalities they bring to their classes.
