~Leotards~

Who doesn’t love a cute leotard? There are so many fun color and style options that you are sure to find the perfect leotard for your dancer to add to her wardrobe.

~Dance Accessories~

Skirts, shirts, warm-ups, bags–I could go on and on. CDT even has a great new drawstring bag that is perfect for storing dance shoes. Need a great stocking stuffer? Fuzzy socks! Nothing is better after a long day of dance than putting on a pair of nice soft, fuzzy socks to show your feet some love.

~Tickets to a Show~

Dancers love to perform, but they also enjoying watching others perform. Watching other performing artists in their element can be a great learning experience for dancers as well as inspire them to continue to grow in their dancing. Consider getting your dancers tickets to a dance production or musical. Chattanooga has many great performing companies stop in town throughout the whole year. It’s definitely worth checking out the Patten Series at UTC and the new Broadway Series at the Tivoli.

~Private Lessons~

Dancers are always looking to improve and grow in their craft, and nothing helps them more than private lessons.  They are a great way for dancers to get the extra personalized attention they need to help their technique reach the next level. Private lessons can also increase a dancer’s self-confidence since they will be getting one on one feedback and encouragement.

The Side Effects of Dancing at Chattanooga Dance Theatre

Chattanooga Dance Theatre teaches some great technique. Students at CDT develop a strong foundation in ballet and with training in modern, jazz and other forms of dance, these dancers feel comfortable in almost any class. Healthy Snacks for Dancers

The typical day of a dancer can be pretty hectic between school, dance class, and rehearsal. A lot of time is spent in the car and the dance studio, so it’s important to keep your body fueled during the hustle and bustle of your busy schedule. Here are some of my favorite snacks to grab on my way to the studio or keep in my bag for breaks between classes and rehearsals.

  1. Nuts

Almonds are my favorite, but any mixture of nuts can provide a good energy boost for your day of dance.

  1. Fruit

Apples and bananas are great snack options that are dance bag friendly.

  1. Carrots

Carrots are a tasty snack to help get in your daily veggies, but cucumbers, celery, and red bell peppers are other good choices.

  1. Hummus

I love hummus! It’s a great way to get some protein to provide a little jet fuel for that 2 hour rehearsal. You can enjoy it with some veggies, pita, or whole grain crackers.

  1. Nut Butter

Nut butters are another good source of protein. I love eating cashew butter with celery, apples, and bananas.

  1. Dried Fruit

Dried fruit is perfect for grabbing a quick bite during a short water break. Banana chips and dried cranberries are some of my favorites.

  1. Pretzels

Pretzels are great. They can be a quick snack on their own, or you can dip them in some hummus or peanut butter. I like to mix pretzels, nuts, and dried cranberries to make my own snack mix.

  1. Granola/snack bar

Granola/snack bars are another dance bag friendly snack. Be careful that you don’t get one with too much added sugar. LARABARs are some of my favorite snack bars.

Preparing Ballet Slippers for their First Class

It seems so simple, they are little leather slippers with a draw string. But believe it or not, poorly fitting slippers can easily become a distraction in class, not to mention cause pain for your little ballet dancer. If a dancer’s feet are hurting, they won’t be able to dance to their potential.  So, I’ve compiled a quick list of “dos” and “don’ts” for fitting your child’s ballet slippers….

First, the ‘dos’….

  • Do make sure that your child’s shoes are fitted, but not too tight. Ballet slippers ideally fit like a pair of socks. There shouldn’t be extra fabric around the foot. If your child is growing quickly it is understandable to buy a half size larger so that you aren’t buying new shoes every four months, but make sure they don’t look like clown shoes!
  • Do write your child’s name in their shoes. There are a lot of dance shoes that look alike.
  • If the elastics aren’t pre-sewn onto the slipper, do make sure the elastics are far enough back that they will hold the heel of the shoe. It is incredibly hard to dance when your shoes keep falling off!
  • Do tie a knot (those bows always come out) in the drawstring without pulling on it tight around the foot.
  • Do cut the drawstring so that there are only half inch tails. No tying and retying. These shoes should be able to easy slip on and off before and after every class.
  • Do tuck the drawstring into the shoe. Hide those tails so that you have a clean looking shoe!

Now, the ‘donts’…

  • Don’t pull on that elastic drawstring! When you pull on the elastic drawstring it tightens the elastic all the way around the foot and can put pressure on the Achilles tendon. This can cut off circulation to the foot and cause a lot of discomfort and pain for your little dancer.
  • Don’t tie the draw string in a bow. Those drawstrings are notorious for coming undone in the middle of class. Many young ones don’t know how to tie it back and if they do, they end up taking a lot of time to do so. The teacher will often end up having to stop class to retie it or knot and cut it. This can be time consuming when you’ve got 12 kids in class!
  • Don’t let your child’s shoes get too small. I know things can get really busy for moms. I’m a mom who works full time to run a business, believe me, I know! But a child wearing shoes that are too small can really injure their feet in the long run. Make sure to take the time to purchase some new shoes as soon as your child says they are feeling tight!
  • Don’t let your child wear ballet slippers (or any dance shoes that she is wearing in the studio) outside. It’s important to keep those shoes clean and you want them to last as long as possible.

 

If you have any other questions about your dancer’s shoes you should speak with your child’s teacher. They know that not everyone has worn ballet slippers and they are always there to help!

It’s that time of year again! Time for the CDT Annual Open House. This year Katelyn Leahy and our newest yoga teacher Allie Johnson, will be teaching some fabulous yoga classes at 2:10, 3:10, and 4:10. Kids can make costumes, participate in creative movement classes, and create artwork. And all can enjoy some yummy refreshments!
